Gastric Band--The Only Adjustable Surgery

Gastric Band surgery is the only adjustable and reversible obesity surgery that does not require cutting and stapling of the stomach or gastrointestinal re-routing to bypass normal digestion.

Gastric banding is performed using laparoscopic surgery which features a lower complication rate than with open or more radical weight loss surgery such as gastric bypass. Less than 1 in 100 gastric band surgery patients are diagnosed with complications, most of which can be treated without admission to hospital.

What can you expect during the surgery?

At the start of the operation, you will be given general anesthesia. If your case is typical, the operation will be performed laparoscopically. During the operation, the band will be fastened around the upper part of your stomach to create a small stomach pouch. Part of the lower stomach will then be sutured over the band. The rest of the lower stomach will stay in its normal position. The access port for adjusting the band will be placed under your skin. To do this, the surgeon will slightly enlarge one of the operative incisions.

There are clear advantages to having laparoscopic surgery, including a smaller incision, less pain in the incision area, potentially fewer wound complications, a faster recovery with the abilit to resume normal activites sooner. Once the anesthesia has worn off, you may feel some pain, which can usually be relieved with ordinary painkillers. The hospital staff will help you get out of bed and start moving as soon as possible to help prevent blood clots, respiratory problems, and bedsores.

What can you expect after surgery?

Right after the operation you will be limited to an occasional sip of water or suck on an ice cube.. The day after the operation, you can have water and clear liquids in small amounts.. To prevent nausea and vomiting, do not drink too much.

On the day after the surgery you will likely have an X-ray. This allows your health team to see that the gastric band is in the right place and that the new stomach outlet is open. You may be asked to swallow a liquid that can be seen on X-ray.

Hospitalization is usually less than 24 hours. The hospital stay may be longer if there are complications or if the surgeon has to convert to an “open” surgical procedure. If there are no complications, you should be able to resume normal activities within a week or two after surgery.

After weight loss surgery, you will need a new nutrition plan. Discuss this in detail with your surgeon and/or dietitian as they can help you learn about and get used to the changes in lifestyle and eating habits you need to make.

All of our providers offer free adjustments, but keep in mind you will need to travel back to the procedure location and will need to pay for your airfair and hotel.  If you wish to have your adjustment done in the U.S., visit our partner's website to view their multiple locations across the country.  Or click here for an information sheet.  Make sure you tell the fill center that you were referred by Health Travel Guides!

Pam Thompson had weight loss surgery in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

I had the gastric sleeve procedure and I could not be happier with the results of my surgery. My only regret? That I waited so long to do it! It has been a little over a year and I am happily down a little over 100 lbs and have reached my goal weight.

I would be more than happy to answer any questions, concerns that you might have. I totally understand that this is a life-changing decision and not to be taken lightly and comes with many, many questions. Read Pam’s story here, or request a quote below.
