Gastric Sleeve: A Newer Approach to Bariatric Surgery

The Gastric Sleeve procedure is a relatively new approach to bariatric surgery. The procedure is non-reversible, and involves removing up to 60% of the stomach with a stapling device so that a stomach ‘tube’ remains. The resultant smaller stomach recduces the the amount of food a patient eats before feeling full. he procedure also reduces the patient’s overall appetite by removing the portion of the stomach that creates the hormones that control appetite.

The gastric sleeve surgery is typically performed laparoscopically, resulting in less pain and scarring, reduced blood loss, shorter hospital stay, and reduced risk of internal organ damage and infection when compared to the traditional open incision technique.

The gastric sleeve operation is usually performed on morbidly obese or high risk patients with the intention of performing another surgery such as the gastric by-pass at a later time. This combined approach has dramatically decreased the risk of weight loss surgery for certain types of weight loss surgery patients, even when the risk of the two surgeries is added.

What can you expect during the surgery?

At the start of the operation, you will be given general anesthesia. During the operation, the surgeon removes approximately two-thirds to three-fourths of the stomach so that the stomach takes the shape of a tube or "sleeve”, measuring from 2-5 ounces (60-150 cc).

Typically the surgery is performed laparoscopically; for most patients this results in less pain, fewer wound complications, and faster recovery. Once the anesthesia has worn off, you may feel some pain, which can usually be relieved with ordinary non-inflammatory painkillers. The hospital staff will help you get out of bed and start moving as soon as possible to help prevent blood clots, respiratory problems, and bedsores. When you return to your hotel, a local health travel guide will check on your recovery progress and ensure any friends and family are notified of your progress.

What can you expect after surgery?

There are several important consumption guidelines a gastric sleeve patient must adopt to experience optimal results of gastric sleeve surgery:

  • Eat small quantities
  • Chew very well- swallow food only after completely mashed.
  • Avoid eating and drinking at the same time
  • Do not lay down or rest after eating
  • Eat five times a day
  • Avoid calorie-rich beverages
  • Avoid aspirin or other stomach irritants such as non-steroid anti-rheumatic drugs

What are the benefits of the Gastric Sleeve procedure?

Most gastric sleeve surgery patients lose 30 to 50% of their excess body weight over a 6 - 12 month period, and a reduction in the complications of obesity, including sleep apnea, asthma, joint pain, arthritis, reflux, fatigue, shortness of breath and overall increased.

Pam Thompson had gastric sleeve surgery in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

I had the gastric sleeve procedure and I could not be happier with the results of my surgery. My only regret? That I waited so long to do it! It has been a little over a year and I am happily down a little over 100 lbs and have reached my goal weight.

I would be more than happy to answer any questions, concerns that you might have. I totally understand that this is a life-changing decision and not to be taken lightly and comes with many, many questions. Read Pam’s story here, or request a quote below.
