Variety of Techniques for Hysterectomy
A hysterectomy is a surgical procedure where the uterus is removed. It’s the most common non-obstetrical procedure of women in the U.S.
The most common reason for a hysterectomy is uterine fibroids, followed by abnormal uterine bleeding, endometriosis and uterine prolapse.
A hysterectomy is performed with an incision through the abdomen or through the vagina. There are a variety of surgical techniques for performing hysterectomies, depending on the reason for surgery, including:
Laparoscopy-assisted vaginal hysterectomy: This adds the use of a laparoscope, which allows the upper abdomen to be carefully inspected during surgery.
Supracervical hysterectomy: Used to remove the uterus while sparing the cervix.
Radical hysterectomy: Involves more extensive surgery that includes removing tissues around the uterus and removal of the upper vagina.
Your physician will discuss which technique will work best for your specific condition.
